The technique
What is a Russian manicure?
A Russian manicure is a dry manicure. Your hands never go into a bowl of water. Instead, we work on a completely dry nail using an electric file (an e-file) fitted with small, specialized bits designed for detailed cuticle work.
Rather than pushing the cuticle back and cutting it with nippers, we gently lift the skin at the base of the nail and clear away the thin layer of non-living tissue that clings to the nail plate. Living skin is never cut. What's left is a perfectly clean, smooth nail, right down to the cuticle line.
That clean surface is what makes the next step possible. Gel is applied right at the cuticle, tucked slightly under its lifted edge, so the color looks like it grows straight out of the skin. As your nail grows, there's no harsh line or gap, just a seamless grow-out that still looks neat in week three.
Skipping the water matters too. Nails absorb water and swell during a soak, then shrink as they dry, which is one of the most common reasons gel lifts within a week. A dry nail stays the same shape, so the gel bond holds. Most of our clients wear their manicure for 3–4 weeks.
It's detailed, unhurried work that takes around 60–75 minutes, and it rewards patience: done consistently and removed carefully, it helps nails grow stronger over time, not thinner.
Gel bonds to a dry, stable nail, so it stays put and looks fresh far longer.

What to expect at your appointment
1
Consultation & nail assessment
We look at your nails' thickness, flexibility and any peeling or lifting, and talk about the shape and color you want.
2
Safe removal, if needed
Existing gel comes off with an e-file and a light touch, leaving a thin protective layer rather than filing into your natural nail.
3
Dry cuticle work
No water. The cuticle is gently lifted and the non-living tissue cleared from the nail plate. Living skin is never cut.
4
Shape, prep & gel application
Nails are shaped and prepped, then a strengthening base and color are placed right at the cuticle line and cured layer by layer.
5
Finish & aftercare
Top coat seals the tips, cuticle oil rehydrates the skin, and we share simple tips to help your manicure last 3–4 weeks.

FAQ
Russian manicure questions, answered
Is a Russian manicure safe?
Yes, when it's performed by a technician trained in the dry technique. The e-file removes only non-living cuticle tissue, so it's more controlled than cutting with nippers. Every metal bit and tool we use is sterilized in an autoclave (hospital-grade steam sterilization) and opened from a sealed pouch, and files and buffers are single-use.
Does it hurt?
It shouldn't. Most clients find it relaxing: no cold water, no snipping. You may feel light vibration or gentle warmth from the e-file. If anything feels uncomfortable, tell us and we'll adjust speed and pressure right away.
How long does it last?
Most clients wear their Russian Manicure (Dry Gel) for 3–4 weeks. Because the gel starts right at the cuticle line, the grow-out stays subtle for much longer than a traditional manicure.
What's the difference from a regular gel manicure?
A regular gel manicure usually soaks the nails, pushes and cuts the cuticle, and leaves a small gap between polish and cuticle. A Russian manicure is completely dry: the cuticle is lifted and refined with an e-file, and gel is placed right at (and slightly under) the cuticle line. The result is cleaner, more precise and lasts 3–4 weeks instead of 7–10 days.
Is it better for my nails long-term?
Done properly, yes. There's no soaking, very light prep and careful e-file removal that leaves the natural nail intact. Many of our regular clients find their nails become stronger and peel less over time.
How often should I come in?
Every 3–4 weeks. Three weeks keeps nails looking their best; going much past four puts extra stress on the nail as it grows.
Can I get one on bare natural nails?
Absolutely. Bare nails are the easiest starting point. We'll assess your nails and choose a base that suits their thickness and flexibility.
Do I need to remove my old gel first?
No, please don't pick or peel it. Come as you are and add Removal when you request your appointment. We'll take it off safely with an e-file before we begin.
Why is it called a “Russian” manicure? Where does it come from?
The dry e-file technique developed across Eastern Europe and the Slavic world, in Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Poland and neighboring countries. “Russian manicure” is simply the name that stuck in the US and the one people search for, so we use it. What you're getting is a dry manicure, an Eastern European tradition our team trained in.
